In the Victorian Era, many flowers were used to convey certain messages without ever speaking a word. And the Rose had many a thing it could convey — dark crimson for love and deep affection, white for purity and innocence, pink for gratitude and appreciation, yellow for friendship and joy, and so on.

 

I think about how we carefully choose which ink to use for which pen, and was reminded of the Victorian Rose. How do colors convey our emotional state when we write? When we compose a letter, when we jot down an important event, when we keep record of the things that happened to us, when we reflect on joys and sorrows both — the blooms and the thorns that are present in every season of our life.
